Why is it So hard to Focus?
ADHD moms may struggle with focusing due to a combination of cognitive and environmental factors. In the ADHD brain, there are differences in neurotransmitter levels and brain structure, particularly in areas responsible for attention and impulse control. This can lead to difficulties in regulating attention, maintaining focus, and filtering out distractions. Additionally, the demands of motherhood, with its constant multitasking and ever-changing priorities, can exacerbate these challenges. The competing demands of managing household tasks, caring for our kids and fulfilling work or personal responsibilities can overwhelm the ADHD brain, making it difficult for us to sustain attention on any one task for an extended period of time.
Environmental factors such as noise, clutter, and interruptions further compound these difficulties, creating an environment ripe for distraction. Despite these challenges, ADHD moms can develop strategies and techniques to improve focus and productivity, such as creating structured routines, minimizing distractions, and practicing mindfulness. With patience, self-compassion, and support, ADHD moms can learn to navigate focus challenges and thrive in their daily lives.

Here are some of the issues we face with our inability to focus. See how many you can relate with…

Personal Story: The Frustrations of Focusing as an ADHD Mom
As an ADHD mom, I once grappled with the daily struggle of focus, watching as it seeped into every aspect of my life, leaving frustration and missed opportunities in its wake. Feeding and playing with my baby felt like an uphill battle, my mind drifting away despite my longing to be present in those precious moments. My interactions with my partner suffered, and the constant buzz of distraction left me feeling distant and disconnected.
In my twenties, the professional world was a revolving door of jobs, each one promising fulfillment yet ultimately falling short due to my inability to maintain focus. Even mundane settings like meetings and lectures proved challenging, with my mind wandering off into daydreams or actually falling asleep. I used to dread meetings and lectures unless I was actively involved in them.
But I refused to let these challenges define me. Armed with determination and a desire for change, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, experimenting with various strategies to improve my focus and reclaim control over my life.
I implemented structured routines and schedules, carving out dedicated time for tasks and setting clear boundaries to minimize distractions. I discovered the power of mindfulness and meditation, finding solace in moments of quiet contemplation and learning to anchor myself in the present moment. I also used the Pomodoro method, but not the usual 25 minutes as my attention span was short. Most of my Pomodoros were 15 minutes or 20 minutes if I managed to focus.
I honed my time management skills, using techniques like time-blocking to prioritize tasks and break them down into manageable steps. And most importantly, I embraced self-compassion, learning to forgive myself for moments of distraction and celebrating each small victory along the way.

Slowly but surely, I began to see progress. I found myself more engaged in conversations with my baby, savoring each precious moment of connection. My relationships flourished as I learned to give my full attention to my partner, fostering deeper bonds of love and understanding.
In my professional life, I discovered a newfound sense of purpose and direction, channeling my scattered energy into meaningful pursuits and finding success in endeavors that once felt out of reach. I found a completely different area which has kept me fully occupied and interested in where I am going strong.
Though the road was long and challenging, I emerged stronger and more resilient than ever before. Through perseverance and determination, I overcame the obstacles that once held me back, proving that with the right mindset and a willingness to adapt, anything is possible.
