What Are Pomodoros? π
No, we’re not talking about delicious Italian tomatoes, although the name does have a culinary origin. The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. Inspired by the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used during college, Cirillo named it “Pomodoro” after the Italian word for tomato.
The Power of the Pomodoro π
Imagine having a superhero tool that can help you tame the ADHD whirlwind and unlock your hidden potential. That’s precisely what the Pomodoro Technique does! By breaking tasks into manageable intervals, typically 25 minutes or 15-minutes long, separated by short breaks, it transforms time management into a game-changer for ADHD minds.
Why Pomodoros?
1. Defeat Procrastination: π―
Procrastination, the arch-nemesis of productivity, often plagues those with ADHD. The Pomodoro Technique offers an antidote! By setting a timer for just 25 minutes or 15 minutes and dedicating yourself to a single task, you can bypass the overwhelming feeling of starting a colossal project. Once you dive into the task, you’ll often find your ADHD-powered hyperfocus kicking in, and before you know it, the Pomodoro is complete!
2. Embrace Short Bursts of Focus: π
Attention spans may be fleeting for ADHD brains, but that’s where Pomodoros shine. Twenty-five minutes may sound short, but it’s the perfect amount of time for sustained focus. Knowing that a break awaits can motivate you to give it your all during each Pomodoro, channeling the superpower of undivided attention.
3. Conquer the Time Warp: β³
For ADHD minds, the concept of time can be elusive, with minutes feeling like seconds and hours like minutes. The Pomodoro Technique introduces a structured rhythm to the day, making time tangible. By completing multiple Pomodoros, you gain a sense of accomplishment, reining in the time warp and managing it effectively.

How to do a Pomodoro π π
Timing the Pomodoros is simple and straightforward. To get started, you’ll need a timer or a Pomodoro app on your phone or computer. Even though usual pomodoros are 25 minutes, for us attention-deficient folk, I recommend a 15-minute timer for starts. Here’s how to time your Pomodoros effectively:
- Set the Timer: Choose the task you want to work on, and set the timer for 15 minutes. This 15-minute interval is known as one Pomodoro.
- Work Intensely: Dive into the task with full focus and dedication. Avoid any distractions and immerse yourself in the work.
- No Interruptions: During the 15 minutes, avoid any interruptions or distractions. If you remember something unrelated to the task, jot it down and deal with it later.
- Take a Short Break: After completing one Pomodoro (15 minutes of focused work), take a short break of around 5 minutes. Use this time to stretch, grab a drink, or do something enjoyable.
- Repeat the Cycle: Once the short break is over, set the timer again for another 25-minute Pomodoro and continue with your task.
- Long Breaks: After completing four Pomodoros (15-minute work intervals), take a more extended break of around 15β30 minutes. This longer break helps to recharge your focus and energy.
- Stay Flexible: The Pomodoro Technique is flexible and can be adjusted to suit your needs. If you find that you work better with shorter or longer intervals, feel free to adapt the timing accordingly.
- Track Your Progress: Keep a record of how many Pomodoros you complete each day. This can help you monitor your productivity and set goals for improvement.
